What to do with your new diving mask

February 23, 2010

At the time of buying a new diving mask there are some steps you should follow in order to use it and wear it properly. Your mask is a basic piece of your diving equipment as well as of your practice of the sport, and therefore it is very important that you know how to handle it.

First of all, you should know that most diving masks are usually made of silicone, and some residuals of this material can remain in it which might become problematic for your diving activities. This residual silicone can make your mask fog while practicing your diving, and this can become a dangerous problem.

Therefore, you should clean this residual silicone before you actually start diving and you can easily remove it and do so. One way which many diving professionals recommend in order to clean a new mask is with toothpaste. According to this, you should rub some toothpaste on the inside of each glass and then wash it thoroughly with water. You should also clean the rest of your diving mask with soap and water as well.

There are some procedures you need to be aware of in order to defog your diving mask since these tends to happen very often. There are some defogging solutions meant for helping divers with this specific problem. You must apply one of these solutions in the inside of your mask’s glass. You should never go into the water without having applied a defogging solution to your mask or it would surely fog.

The more you exhale through your nose, the more your mask would tend to fog. This is one of the reasons for which you should be relaxed and maintain calm while being into the water. It is very important that you always feel secure and comfortable when you go into the water and start diving, otherwise you might run into some problems such as lacking control over your body when needed. If you feel comfortable and relaxed, you will exhale less and more slowly and this would help you maintaining your diving mask defogged.

Diabetes and diving

January 26, 2010

Diving with diabetes can be very dangerous not only for the person who suffers it but to his buddy as well. If a diver has a hypoglycemic attack while he is into the water, he might loose consciousness and die due to it. This way, it is important that those who suffer from diabetic and wish to dive are very careful and aware of the risks this sport imply to them.

Hypoglycemic attacks have a higher chance to happen when the person goes through physiological stress as it happens while practicing an exercise such as diving. This way, the chance of a diabetic person to suffer such attack while diving is not only higher than when he is not practicing any exercise but even more than others in which he could receive help right away. Besides help, if a person suffers a diabetes attack while diving he would also have the additional problem of the environment in which he is and the lack of oxygen it might imply.

In some parts of the world, diabetic people who wish to dive must go through a medical examination and only in case they pass the standard established by it they are allowed to practice the sport. Besides this, a diabetic person who has suffered a hypoglycemic attack within one year at the time they wish to dive they would not be allowed to do it.

Another condition which a diabetic person must accomplish in order to be able to dive safely is to have the approval of his physician or the diabetic clinic which he attends. This is not only to assure the diabetic person and those who will be responsible of him during his diving that he is in proper health shape but also to make sure this person regularly attends a clinic and has his diabetes under control.

Besides all what was mentioned above, many diving academies ask diabetic people to complete forms on a regular basis and might also ask his physician to do so as well. A diabetic diver should always be aware of the risks he goes through by diving with diabetes and should regularly go through medical controls in order to be sure his health is in balance.

The challenges of wall diving

December 23, 2009

Wall diving can be a very exciting activity for divers who already count with an important amount of expertise and who wish to go through new challenges. This kind of diving allows them to enjoy sea life in a new perspective and while practicing a different diving style.

Most divers find very exciting the way in which, by practicing this sport, they can experience different sea life styles and habitats while they submerge following the wall. It can be a fascinating activity which involves the diver’s skills as well as it shows him the sea world from a new perspective. Although it takes a diver to have experience and it might be very challenging, it is highly enjoyable and most divers who have already practiced most of the other kinds of diving find wall diving a very exciting new experience.

In order to be able to enjoy every different stage of the activity, it is usually advised to descend slowly and calmly while paying attention to the environment. This way, a diver can discover as many fish, plants and sea elements as possible while practicing a relaxing diving.

Sometimes, at some wall diving areas, the walls start at a shallow point where it already shows interesting sea elements such as corals or beautiful plants. This way, this type of diving can be very enjoyable from the moment the diver enters the water as well as during each stage of the submersion.

Wall diving is also very exciting due to the fact that the diver has the wall as a supporting surface at the same time than he does not have anything under his feet. Wall diving allows divers to feel the fun of being suspended in the ocean, without any bottom below them but being able to be easily floating while holding from the wall.

Some wall diving places would allow you to see a very wide variety of different fish and sea elements. Near the surface, you could enjoy basket sponges or soft corals, and then, as you descend, you could have sea whips added to such view. If you kept descending, you could also see fish such as eagle rays or even black tip sharks depending on the place you are.

Wreck diving can be a very fascinating sport

October 28, 2009

For many people, there is no way to spend their free time better than practicing wreck diving. The fascination of this sport has its roots on the natural human curiosity which we all have. Discovering things is always exciting and fun, and even more when they are things or objects to which most people can’t access.

Wreck diving allows people to discover objects which belong to the maritime history as well as to the world one. Ships and all kind of military objects belonging to wars are some of the most interesting wrecks which people wish to discover and observe while diving.

We can have a direct encounter with those who lived before us and their cultures by being able to see a lost ship just in the way it ended up. History and a culture past is never so much appealing and so real as when we have a direct contact with it and with what is left of it, and these kind of contacts is with which wreck diving deals with.

By wreck diving we might have access not only to pieces of history, but also to lost objects and even treasures. The possibilities are endless and this is one of the main reasons for which wreck diving is such an interesting and attractive sport to practice. Those who practice this sport never know what they will find, and that is what makes them enjoy this sport so much.

Many lost ships and treasures have been found by people who were wreck diving without actually looking for them. This might happen to anyone, since there are so many lost objects of all kinds in the seas which are lost and could be found by accident. Actually, this is one of the reasons for which wreck diving is so appealing to many people.

There also are some people who practice wreck diving as a profession and look for lost treasures for a living more than just a hobby. But, whatever their intentions are, all those who practice wreck diving have in common the love for discovering those lost objects and find this sport very fun and exciting.
